The Estrugamou mansion, historic familiar house in the best area of Buenos Aires | BACK

With a unique and elegant style, the Estrugamou Residence is located on cobbled streets, a few meters from one of the main green spaces in downtown Buenos Aires, Plaza San Martin. This perfectly maintained open space is covered by beautiful trees, around which many important historical buildings are also located.

Don Alejandro Estrugamou's Residence, emblematic for its stately architecture, was built in the first decade of 1900, with an eclectic style influenced by the French Baroque.

This property is situated in the heart of the City of Buenos Aires, in 1251 Basavilbaso Street, between Juncal St. and Arenales St., only meters from Palacio San Martin and Cancillería (Foreign Affairs Ministry). We access the residence through an imposing and very finely wrought iron gate, which at that time revealed a beautiful garden and fountains that filled the state with life.

The facade has the appearance of a large private residence unit. Its details used to show the social status of its inhabitants. Its large moldings, high ceilings, large windows with balconies and balustrades are some of the features of this vast building.

The main entrance signals the symmetry axis of the main structure, attached to which is the service sector. The magnificent style of this entrance is marked by a gate of slender Ionic columns.

When we enter the residence, the exquisite taste of the inhabitants of this majestic residence is revealed at first in the immense hall which works as a distribution area from which we access the rest of the rooms on that level. A huge and imposing wooden staircase lined with bars arises in the center, overlooking the living room and connecting to the first floor hall.

Downstairs, among other rooms, we find the private living room of Mrs. Estrugamou, where everything has been arranged with art and exquisite taste. We can also see the main living room of the residence with its long table at which up until recent years the entire family gathered together for lunch. There a French chandelier hangs in the center of the room, along with hand-painted ceilings and oak furniture, showing simplicity and style that leads to a pleasant image. We cannot forget to mention the room with billiards table, where everything has been meticulously arranged around it, creating an ideal place in which they have probably spent long nights playing billiards with family and friends. Both floors are connected not only by the imposing staircase but also by a distinguished elevator.

The upper floor hall overlooks the lower floor. Peeking from there not only we have a partial view of the living room on the ground floor but also we are fully immersed in a world represented by the spirit of an era and the cultural character of Buenos Aires during the Belle Epoque.

The service area has a large kitchen, an office, a daily dining room and large service units all facing an internal courtyard which provides natural light to the house.

The 1,500 m2 house is divided in 12 rooms with distinguished character and style, built on 1166 m2 lot.

Finally, the Estrugamou Residence is a collector's item of inestimable value, which reveals the heritage that it represents.
